Enjoy the splendid views of the High Atlas and the Toubkal and do not hesitate to ski in the high snowy mountains.
After visiting the Oukaimeden Ski Resort, your driver will take you on an excursion to explore the Setti Fatma waterfalls and the Ourika Valley. If you coincide with a market day (Monday or Friday), you will have the opportunity to take a tour and discover the Berber Souk.
You will also have the opportunity to visit a Berber family in their home and enjoy a small snack and a glass of tea at the inhabitant’s house before the end of your excursion. Return to Marrakech at 17:30 and recovery at your place of residence.
Oukaimden a sporty eastern adventure
If you drive just 80 kilometers south of the busy Marrakech, you will see another reason: the Atlas Mountains. Here you can ski to your heart’s content.
It heats up from the inside: Tea with fresh mint leaves
In Oukaimeden, the largest and most popular ski area, the season lasts until mid-March. At an altitude of up to 3268 metres, 23 kilometres of snow can be covered and ten ski lifts can be used. The region is located on the Djebel Toubkal, at 4167 metres, the highest mountain in North Africa. Particularly fascinating: while the southern side is free of snow, the northern slopes are covered with snow and you can see the desert from the slopes. An icy wind is blowing there. That’s why the ski rabbits like to warm up in the hut before making the first descent – with a “Whisky Maroc” or also called “Whisky Berber”.
The traditional drink is, contrary to its name, tea with fresh mint leaves. The tasting in the charming huts is of course a must and also highly recommended as it allows you to warm up well.
With the mule to the highest lift on the African continent
Winter sports fans enjoy challenging descents without any crowds. In addition, the wallet is spared: the day pass costs just six euros. With it in your pocket you can continue on to the ski lift. And with the mule. As there are only a few lifts, animals are a welcome means of transport. Once you arrive at the valley station, you board the only chairlift in the area. This chairlift carries its passengers up to 3300 metres : the highest lift in the whole of Africa.
The most popular route is called “La Comb”. There is enough snow here even in spring. In Oukaimeden all slopes remain unprepared. The tracks are icy in some places. A real challenge, but at the same time a chance to finally ski in complete harmony with nature.
From snowy mountain villages :
In the mountain villages close to the ski area, it is very quiet and peaceful. Here the Berbers live somewhat isolated in their own little world of agriculture and animal husbandry. In the morning you are woken up early by the muezzin who calls for prayer. If you want to get an idea of how they live and work, you can visit them. For some of them, accommodation for tourists is also an additional source of income.
