Visit the secret garden of marrakech ( Le jardin secret )
The secret garden of Marrakech is first of all the beautiful story of a successful renovation coupled with that of a terrible assassination at the top of power.
The Secret Garden opens to the public for the first time in its history. The origins of the complex date back to the time of the Saadian dynasty, more than four hundred years ago.
Rebuilt in the mid-19th century by an influential Atlas caïd, Le Jardin Secret was the home of some of the highest political figures in Morocco and Marrakech.
The Secret Garden, which today can be fully appreciated thanks to its recent restoration, is part of the great tradition of Arab-Andalusian and Moroccan palaces. The visitor can thus discover the gardens and the buildings that make it up, which are exceptional testimonies of Islamic art and architecture.
The Secret Garden is made up of two quite distinct sets, each of them being considered as a riad (traditional style of Maroccan architecture, comprising a house with a garden in general). Surrounded by high walls without windows, the riad, with a rectangular plan, is built around a vast garden. In the centre of the garden, which is divided into four flowerbeds by the intersection of two raised alleys, stands a marble basin. The pavilions of the Secret Garden, preceded by porticoes with pointed arches and wooden lintels, have beamed ceilings, double doors and low windows.
The green spaces of the Secret Garden are now divided into exotic and Islamic gardens. They have been laid out by the landscaper Tom Stuart-Smith.
The exotic garden: plants from different parts of the world
The Islamic garden: in the heart of the Secret Garden is a spring. Fountains, marble basins and riad ponds create a play of light, while the continuous murmur of water promotes the serenity of the surroundings and introspection.
