5-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga
Erg Chegaga is where the tourist trail ends. No paved road in, no camel convoy of 40 people, no generator noise at camp. Just 100 square kilometres of wild Sahara, a 4x4, and guides who have been crossing this desert their entire lives.
Erg Chegaga — The Real Sahara
Most Morocco desert tours go to Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — and for good reason, it is spectacular. But Erg Chegaga, 60 kilometres west of M'Hamid near the Algerian border, is a different proposition entirely. No electricity, no mobile signal worth mentioning, no coach parties. The dunes here reach 300 metres — among the highest in the Sahara — and the silence at night is absolute.
Getting there requires a proper 4x4 and a guide who knows the tracks. The last stretch from M'Hamid is across open desert — no road, no markers. This is not a tour for people who want comfort above everything. It is a tour for people who want the real thing.
The 5-day format works because Chegaga is far — around 7 to 8 hours from Marrakech on Day 1, with a night in the Draa Valley before the final push to the dunes on Day 2. You get two nights in the desert, a full day to actually be there, and a gradual return that takes you back through some of the most remote landscapes in North Africa.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley
Pickup between 7am and 8am. South over the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka. Stop at Ait Benhaddou for an hour with a local guide. Lunch in Ouarzazate. The afternoon drive follows the Draa Valley south — the longest river in Morocco, lined with ancient ksour and dense palmeries. Overnight in a guesthouse in the Draa Valley, around Agdz or Zagora. First real taste of the deep south.
Draa Valley → M'Hamid → Erg Chegaga (4x4)
Continue south to M'Hamid — the last village before the open desert. From here the paved road ends. Your guide takes over navigation across the desert tracks to Erg Chegaga, roughly 60 kilometres of open sand and hammada. Arrival at the camp in the late afternoon. Camel ride at sunset if you want it. Dinner under the largest open sky in Morocco.
Full day in Erg Chegaga
This is the day most tours don't give you. No schedule, no driving, nowhere to be. Sunrise climb on the dunes. Breakfast. The rest of the morning is yours — walk, read, explore the surrounding hammada, talk to the camp guides about their routes across the desert. Lunch at camp. Afternoon on foot or by camel. Sunset from the highest dune you can find. Second night in the desert.
Erg Chegaga → M'Hamid → Ouarzazate
Morning in the desert before the 4x4 return across the tracks to M'Hamid. The drive back north follows a different route where possible — different villages, different landscapes. Overnight in Ouarzazate. Optional visit to the Atlas Film Studios if the group is interested — the largest film studio complex outside Hollywood, and the location for many scenes you would recognise immediately.
Ouarzazate → Ait Benhaddou → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
A relaxed morning before the final drive back north. Second visit to Ait Benhaddou in different light — it reads very differently on the return. Over the Atlas and back into Marrakech between 5pm and 7pm. Drop-off at your hotel.

Is Erg Chegaga worth it compared to Merzouga?
Different experience entirely. Merzouga is spectacular but heavily visited — dozens of tourist camps within sight of each other, generators, groups arriving by the busload. Erg Chegaga has none of that. The dunes reach 300 metres, the silence at night is absolute, and the 4x4 crossing from M'Hamid filters out mass tourism entirely. If you have already been to Merzouga or you want the real Sahara rather than the popular one, Chegaga is worth every extra kilometre. If this is your first Morocco desert experience, Merzouga in 3 days is the more accessible starting point.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga?
Marrakech to M'Hamid is around 7 hours by road (445km). From M'Hamid the paved road ends — the 4x4 crossing to Erg Chegaga takes another 1h30 to 2 hours across open desert tracks. Total: around 9 hours on Day 2 including the off-road section. This is why the tour needs 5 days — the logistics of getting there and back properly require the time. A 4-day version would cut the free day in the desert, which defeats the point.
What is the recommended itinerary for a 5-day Erg Chegaga tour?
Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley (overnight). Day 2: Draa Valley → M'Hamid → 4x4 desert crossing to Erg Chegaga (2-3 hours off-road) → camp arrival, camel ride at sunset. Day 3: Full free day at Erg Chegaga — sunrise climb, no schedule, walk the hammada, second night in the desert. Day 4: 4x4 return to M'Hamid → drive north to Ouarzazate (overnight). Day 5: Ouarzazate → Aït Benhaddou → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech, arriving 5pm to 7pm. The free day on Day 3 is what makes this tour different from any 3 or 4-day circuit.
What is the camel trek experience like at Erg Chegaga?
The camel ride at Chegaga is optional — available at the camp on arrival. The setting is genuinely different from Merzouga: no other groups visible, no camp lights on the horizon. A sunset ride across 300-metre dunes with nothing in any direction is as close to the real Sahara as most people will ever get. The ride typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour. Guides provide turbans and handle the camels throughout.
What is the best time of year to visit Erg Chegaga?
October to April. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot — warm days, cold nights, good light. Winter (December to February) works well but desert nights drop well below 10°C, sometimes near freezing. Bring serious warm layers. Summer (June to August) is very hot — above 45°C in the day. The crossing in summer heat in a 4x4 with no air conditioning on the tracks is genuinely uncomfortable. Possible but not recommended unless you are specifically seeking the heat experience.
