4-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga
The same iconic route as the 3-day tour — Ait Benhaddou, Erg Chebbi, camel ride at sunset — but with one extra day that changes everything. More time in the desert, a slower return, and the Todra Gorges on the way back.
Why the 4-Day Tour is Worth the Extra Day
The difference between the 3-day and 4-day Merzouga tour is not just one more night — it is a completely different pace — full 3-day vs 4-day comparison. On the 3-day tour, two of the three days are essentially driving. On the 4-day version, the driving is distributed across four stages, which means you actually have time to stop, look around, and not spend the entire experience watching Morocco pass through a window.
The extra night falls in the Dades Valley on the return — one of the most underrated landscapes in Morocco. Long, narrow, carved by a river between rose-coloured cliffs. Most tourists drive through it in a hurry. On the 4-day tour, you wake up there.
The Todra Gorges — a 300-metre slot canyon with a river running through it — and the Erg Chebbi dunes — also gets a proper stop rather than a quick photo break. If you have four days to spend on a Morocco desert tour, this is the version to book.

Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura
Pickup between 7am and 8am. South through the Atlas Mountains via Tizi n'Tichka. Stop at Ait Benhaddou — the UNESCO-listed ksar used as a film location in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. Lunch in Ouarzazate. Afternoon drive through Skoura, famous for its dense palmeries and scattered kasbahs. Overnight in a guesthouse in the Dades Valley area — a first proper look at the southern Moroccan landscape at its most photogenic.
Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga
Morning drive through the Dades Gorges before the road opens onto the southern plains. Stop at the Todra Gorges — a narrow slot canyon where 300-metre walls press in from both sides and a clear river runs along the base. One of the most dramatic natural stops in Morocco. Continue east through Tinghir and across the Tafilalet region. Arrival at the Merzouga dunes in the late afternoon for the camel ride to the Berber camp. Dinner at the camp, traditional music, and a sky that gets darker and fuller the longer you look at it.
Erg Chebbi sunrise → Merzouga village → Dades Valley
Early wake-up for the sunrise on the dunes. After breakfast and the camel ride back, the morning is free — quad biking, sandboarding, a visit to a local Berber family or simply sitting with a coffee watching the desert go quiet. Lunch in Merzouga before the return drive begins. Overnight in the Dades Valley — a very different atmosphere from the desert: green, cooler, with the sound of the river.
Dades Valley → Ouarzazate → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
A relaxed morning in the valley before the drive back over the Atlas. The Tizi n'Tichka pass in the afternoon light looks completely different from the morning drive on Day 1. Stop at Ait Benhaddou again if the group wants a second look — it reads differently the second time. Arrival in Marrakech between 7pm and 9pm depending on traffic.

What is the real difference between the 3-day and 4-day Merzouga tour?
The real difference is not an extra night — it's a full day in the desert. On the 3-day tour, Merzouga is a sunset arrival and a sunrise departure. On the 4-day tour, Day 3 is entirely at Merzouga: quad biking, sandboarding, a visit to the village of Khamlia and its Gnawa musicians, or simply spending a day in the dunes with no schedule. You sleep two nights in the desert region instead of rushing back after sunrise. The 3-day tour means you see Merzouga. The 4-day tour means you actually live in it for a day.
What is the recommended itinerary for a 4-day Merzouga desert tour?
Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka (2,260m) → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dadès Valley (overnight). Day 2: Dadès Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga — camel ride at sunset, night in camp at Erg Chebbi. Day 3: Sunrise on the dunes → full day in the Merzouga area (quad biking, Khamlia village, nomad families, or simply the desert) → overnight back in Dadès Valley. Day 4: Dadès Valley → Ouarzazate → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech, arriving 7pm to 9pm.
What is the typical cost of a 4-day vs 3-day Merzouga tour?
The 3-day shared tour starts at €80 per person. The 4-day shared tour starts at €120 per person — the difference covers the extra night in a guesthouse, an additional dinner, and the extra driving day. Private tours start at €100 for 2 people on the 3-day, and proportionally more for the 4-day. Neither includes lunches, entrance fees or tips. For groups of 4 or more, private often works out competitive with shared per person.
What to pack for a 4-day Merzouga desert tour?
4 days means 3 different environments: mountain pass, valley guesthouses, desert camp. One soft bag covers all of it. Long trousers for the camel ride — bare legs on a saddle for 45 minutes is uncomfortable. A warm layer for desert nights, which drop fast even in summer. A scarf or chech for wind and sand. Closed shoes for the dunes and gorge walk, sandals for the camp. High SPF sunscreen — altitude at Tizi n'Tichka and desert reflection both burn fast. Power bank — no charging at the desert camp. Cash for lunches, entrance fees and tips. Blankets provided at the camp, no sleeping bag needed. Pack a small daypack for the camel ride — main bag stays in the vehicle.
Tips for the camel trek and desert camp in Merzouga?
The camel ride to camp takes 45 minutes to an hour — wear long trousers, bare legs on a saddle chafe fast. Hold the pommel on the way up and down, not the sides. Once moving it's stable. At the camp: the temperature drops sharply after sunset even in summer, bring a warm layer you can put on immediately after the ride. The camp fire starts after dinner — stay close to it. For the sunrise climb, wake-up is around 5am, the light changes fast and the best 20 minutes are the first ones. Don't skip it for sleep. Tips for the camp staff and camel guide are appreciated — ask your driver what is customary before arrival rather than figuring it out on the night.
