Desert Tours from Marrakech to the Sahara
From a 2-day overnight in Zagora to a 5-day crossing through Erg Chegaga — all tours include camel trekking, a night in a Berber camp, and the kind of silence you can only find in the Sahara. Departing daily from Marrakech.
Sahara Desert Tours from Marrakech — What You Need to Know
The Sahara is roughly 9 to 10 hours from Marrakech by road. Most travelers do it in 3 days — enough time to reach Merzouga, spend a night in the dunes, and return. If you have more time, the 4 or 5-day options open up routes that most tourists never see.
The main desert destination from Marrakech is Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — the classic orange dunes that appear in most Morocco travel photos. The drive takes you through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, past the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, through Ouarzazate, and along the Draa Valley before the landscape opens into the desert. Every kilometre of that drive is part of the experience.
A shorter alternative is Zagora — reachable in 6 hours, better suited for a 2-day trip if your time in Morocco is limited. For experienced travelers looking for something off the standard route, Erg Chegaga near M'Hamid is wilder, emptier, and requires 5 days minimum — but it is the closest thing to real Sahara solitude you'll find.
All our desert tours include pickup from your hotel in Marrakech, transport in air-conditioned vehicles, an English-speaking driver-guide, camel trekking at sunset, and a night in a traditional Berber camp with dinner included. Shared group departures run every day. Private tours run on any date, any group size.

Shared Group or Private — Which Desert Tour is Right for You?
Shared Group Tours
You join a small group of travelers — typically 8 to 14 people — in a comfortable minibus. The itinerary is fixed and departs every day. This is the most affordable way to do the Sahara and the most popular option for solo travelers and couples.
- Lowest price — from €65 for 2 days
- Daily guaranteed departures
- Meet other travelers from around the world
- Fixed itinerary and stops
Private Desert Tours
Your group has the vehicle and guide exclusively. You set the pace, choose the stops, and adapt the itinerary as you go. Private tours cost more but give you flexibility that no shared tour can match — especially for families or groups of 4 or more.
- Flexible itinerary — stop whenever you want
- Any date, any group size
- More time at each stop
- Better value for groups of 4+
What to Expect on a Desert Tour from Marrakech
The first day is mostly driving — but it is one of the best drives in Africa. You leave Marrakech early morning, cross the Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, stop at Ait Benhaddou (the kasbah used in Game of Thrones, Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia), and reach Ouarzazate by midday. The afternoon takes you through the Draa Valley, past palmeries and ancient ksour, before the road straightens and the landscape slowly turns to sand.
You arrive at the dunes in the late afternoon — timing it for the camel ride at sunset. The light on Erg Chebbi at that hour is something most people are not prepared for. The camp is simple — traditional Berber tents, shared facilities, dinner cooked on-site, and a fire with music at night. Bring a warm layer. Even in summer, desert nights get cold.
The second morning starts before sunrise for the dune climb. After breakfast the group returns to Marrakech, stopping at the same landmarks but in different light. Most people are back in Marrakech by early evening on day 3.

"Amazing trip — you get to see so many different landscapes. Todgha Gorge was definitely my highlight, with its fresh green valley and cool air even in the heat. The camel ride into the desert was unforgettable, and the camp was very comfortable with great tents and beds."
"Really nice experience, you learn a lot about Berber culture. The Sahara is just magic — the colors and the big dunes are crazy, really something special. Our guide Younes was very friendly and funny, always there when you need him."
"The guides were all wonderful and very knowledgeable. The High Atlas Mountains was a trip highlight for me because of the beautiful views and nice people. I would recommend this tour to anyone looking for an adventure and who likes to meet new people from all around the world."
Desert Tours from Marrakech — FAQ
What exact route does a desert tour from Marrakech follow?
Departure at 8am. For Merzouga (3-4 days): Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dadès Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga. Expect 7 to 10 hours driving on day one. For Zagora (2 days): same Atlas crossing but you turn south through the Draa Valley instead — around 6 hours to camp. On private tours you get real time at Aït Benhaddou. On shared tours it's usually 45 minutes and back on the road.
What is included in the price — meals, camel trek, accommodation, entrance fees?
All desert tours include hotel pickup, transport, camel trek at sunset, one night in a desert camp, one night in a hotel or guesthouse, breakfast and dinner throughout. Lunch is not included — budget around €10 minimum per stop. Entrance fees are never included; Aït Benhaddou is around 20 MAD. Tips are not included and not mandatory — but ask your operator what is customary before departure. Guides and drivers who feel appreciated from day one consistently deliver a better experience. For camp comfort, ask specifically before booking whether bathrooms are private or shared — any serious operator will answer directly.
Shared group or private — which desert tour is right for you?
Shared tours run 8 to 14 people in a minibus. Fixed stops, fixed pace. Great for solo travelers and tight budgets. The social side is real — travelers consistently mention meeting people around the campfire as a highlight. Downside: Aït Benhaddou stops are often rushed. Private tours mean your vehicle, your pace. Families, couples and photographers consistently rate private higher — more stops, more flexibility, guides who actually explain things. For groups of 3 or more, private often works out close in price per person. Simple rule: solo or budget → shared. Family, couple, or anyone who hates being rushed → private.
Are Marrakech desert tours safe for families?
Yes — the main routes to Merzouga and Zagora are well-travelled, paved, and have regular police checkpoints. Operators use modern air-conditioned vehicles with seat belts. Guides pick calmer camels for kids and keep rides short. Private family tents are available at most mid-range and luxury camps. Let your operator know children's ages before booking — meal timing, camel ride length and camp comfort can all be adjusted. Avoid deep Erg Chegaga routes with children under 6: long unpaved tracks and very basic camps.
What is the best time of year for a Sahara tour from Marrakech?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures between 25–35°C, cool nights, good light for photography. October is consistently the most booked month. Winter (December–February) works well if you don't mind cold nights — below 10°C at the camp is common, bring proper layers. Summer (June–August) is possible but tough — above 40°C in the desert. One thing travelers mention that forecasts don't: the night temperature drop catches people off guard regardless of season. A warm layer is non-negotiable year-round.
